Central Florida experienced freezes unlike anything we have seen in decades. Many gardeners with tropical and even sub-tropic plants suffered many losses. Now that it has been a few weeks, some plants are starting to rebound. It is very important with many trees to check where you begin to see new growth coming form. Many trees, especially fruit trees, are grafted on to special root stock to help the success of the tree in different soil types. While our business typically promotes avoiding chemical management of plant and pest species, thoughtful and precise chemical management of these weeds may be essential in controlling garden beds. Some invasive species and tough to kill weeds may NEED chemical management. What is worse... allowing invasive plant species to grow and thrive or chemical management that would potentially destroy a localized ecosystem? While we often stay away from chemical management, in certain circumstances we have to ask the question.... Which is worse? Infiltration of these plants or the chemical that prevents…

Florida Frost and How to Protect Plants

Protecting plants from frost is crucial to prevent damage to tender vegetation during cold weather. As Floridians, we don't deal with Frost often and sometimes we find ourselves unprepared. Frost can damage plants through freeze injury. When the temperature outside drops below freezing, the water within plant cells can freeze causing tissue damage. Plants have varying levels of hardiness and gardener's should have a good idea which plants will need protection during a frost.

Here are some effective ways to cover plants and shield them from frost:

Row Covers or Frost Blankets:

  • Use row covers or frost blankets made of breathable fabric (such as burlap or spun-bonded polyester) to create a protective barrier over plants.

  • These covers allow sunlight, air, and moisture to reach the plants while providing insulation against frost.

Old Sheets or Blankets:
