Bidens alba is a Florida native wildflower native to most of the United States. Since the latin botanical name is easy to say, it is usually called by that instead of the common names. Common names include beggarticks, butterfly needle, and spanish needle. It is an annual wildflower that grows almost anywhere the seeds will germinate. And boy do they germinate! It is an aggressive spreader through seed. Once you have one of these plants, you will always have this plant!
Bidens alba is commonly looked down on as an annoying weed. But it is anything but that. The flowers are attractive even though the leggy growth habit is not everybody's cup of tea. The flowers are also one of the, if not THE most common sources of pollen for honeybees in the state of Florida. the bees flock to this plant. Not just honeybees, but native bees too.
The flowers and leaves are edible. They have little flavor but can be eaten raw. Flowers can be used as a garnish on salads. It is thought that sap can help stop bleeding.
As if this plant couldn't get any better, it is also a host plant for the dainty sulphur butterfly.
