Calamint is a FL native short-lived perennial with fragrant leaves similar to mint with beautiful and unique purple flowers. As a short-lived perennial, one plant will act as a perennial for 2-3 years on average. It can self-seed itself in the right conditions. It can also be propagated through cuttings. Unlike true mints and the native Brown's Savory, Calamint is more tolerant of drought and dry soils. It still will enjoy supplemental irrigation during drought. Blooms best in fall and winter.
Calamint has many documented medicinal uses and has culinary uses as a spice.
The natural range of Calamint is limited to northern counties in the panhandle of Florida. It will act as a normal short-lived perennial in zones 8. In zones south of 8, it is expected to act still as a short-lived perennial but may be less resistant to drought.
