Partridge pea is an annual or short lived perennial native to Florida. It reseeds itself easily ensuring that it will come back with pretty yellow blooms every spring. Larval host for cloudless sulfur, gray hairstreak, orange sulfur, sleepy orange, little yellow and ceranus blue butterflies.

Not only is this a great addition to your butterfly garden, but this plant is also a legume and will help ammend soil by adding nitrogen. This makes it a great companion plant for your food forest or foodscape. Some landscapers have used Partridge Pea as border plant along water banks or ditches to help prevent erosion.

It grows to be about 3' tall and 3' wide. It prefers full sun but will tolerate shade. We begin to see this plant emerge from seed around late March in central Florida. It has a natural distrubution across the entire state of Florida and can be grown in zones 8,9, and 10.

While you may be tempted to eat the bean pods of this plant, we suggest you don't. It is documented to be edible in small quantities. But, it can be a GI irritant. Best to avoid and find something else.

Naturally found in FL across the entire state.

Prefers and blooms best in full sun.

Enjoys dry sandy soils. Drought tolerant.
