This FL native perennial grass often gets confused with muhly grass when in bloom. It makes a great border plant. We also like to mix it in our landscape for fall color. Wispy flowers are a pinkish/purple in the fall. Can appear dormant in the winter. 
 
Clumping grasses are great in any landscape. They can fill an area really well, make a nice border, or be grown in clusters of 2 or 3 to divide one area from another. We especially like to grow clumping grasses intermixed with our butterfly host plants. These grasses will offer some protection to developing caterpillars as the long grass leaves help cover parts of the host plant. While not a primary location for chrysalis, some caterpillars will chose native grasses as a site to pupate. 
 
Larval host for the zabulon skipper. 
 
Native to central and eastern U.S. including Florida
Natural range in FL is the entire state with the exception of the southernmost counties. 
Enjoys full sun but can tolerate shade.
Likes sandy soils that are a range of somewhat moist to brief dry periods.
Reaches 2-4' tall and 2-3' wide.
Can be grown in zones 8-10
