Yaupon Holly is a FL native bush that is commonly grown for its white showy flowers and has exploded with popularity for its use as tea. It is highly sought after for adding caffeine and flavor to tea. The leaves are harvested and dried in the process. The berries should be avoided as food since they can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea - as the latin name suggests. Birds, however, will gladly snack on the berries.
In order to produce berries, a male and female plant are needed.
Produces suckers that can be controlled by mowing.
This plant can withstand flooding of brackish water and is moderately tolerant of salty wind and spray.
