Strawberry Mint ‘Peperita’

Mentha × piperita ‘Strawberry’

Strawberry Mint ‘Peperita’ is a fragrant, fast-growing perennial herb prized for its refreshing mint flavor and distinctive strawberry-like aroma. Its bright green, textured leaves make it an attractive addition to herb gardens and containers, while its small lavender-to-pink flowers add seasonal interest and attract pollinators.

Culinary Uses:

The aromatic leaves can be used fresh or dried in herbal teas, iced tea, lemonades, mocktails, and other refreshing beverages. Its subtle strawberry fragrance also makes it especially appealing in fruit salads, desserts, ice cream, cakes, and as a fresh garnish. Harvest young leaves regularly for the best flavor and aroma.

Soil & Water:

Strawberry Mint grows best in rich, fertile, well-drained soil that stays consistently moist. It tolerates a range of soil types but should not be allowed to dry out for extended periods. Water regularly, particularly during hot or dry weather. Because mint spreads vigorously through underground rhizomes, growing it in a container is a good way to keep it contained.

Light Requirements:

Grow Strawberry Mint in full sun to partial shade. It performs well with several hours of direct sunlight each day, while some afternoon shade can be beneficial in areas with very hot summers.

Native Origin:

Strawberry Mint is a cultivated mint selection rather than a plant with a distinct natural native range. It belongs to Mentha × piperita, the peppermint group, which originated in Europe as a hybrid of watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata).

USDA Hardiness Zones:

Strawberry Mint is generally listed as hardy in approximately USDA Zones 4–9, although published recommendations vary among growers and cultivars. Some sources list it more broadly, while specialized perennial-grower information gives a range of Zones 3a–7b.

Mint Parentage:

‘Strawberry’ belongs to the Mentha × piperita group. Peppermint is a hybrid of watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). The ‘Strawberry’ selection is valued for adding a sweet, strawberry-like fragrance to the characteristic mint aroma.

Growing Tip:

Like most mints, Strawberry Mint can spread rapidly. Planting it in a container or dedicated herb planter helps prevent it from taking over nearby garden beds.

This plant is shipped in a 6" pot with soil.

Mints grow well for us in Central Florida when given enough water during hot summers. If soils are not kept moist, plants quickly wilt and die back. We like to grow mint in partial sun to avoid soils drying out.

Mint can be an aggressive spreader like many other species of mint. Plant carefully as it can easily escape the desired area. For easier control, we recommend planting mints in containers or raised beds.

The Mint Family is native to temperate areas of America, Europe, and Asia

Likes full sun the most but prefer partial shade

Prefers moist soils.

Foliage remains low to the ground and spreads out.

Can be grown in zones 3-9 as a perennial that may die back in freezes.
