Prickly Pear Cactus is a FL native wonder. Not only is this species of Nopal native to FL, it holds all the same edible characteristics of other Nopals. The pads, flowers, and fruits are all edible. Nopals hold a place in Mexican cuisine and you can find many recipes that have been developed from that culture. Don't have any interest in eating it? Plant if for the flowers! It also makes a great plant for dry sunny areas in the garden where nothing else will grow.

This is a spiney species of Nopal making it great for planting in areas just outside your daughter's bedroom window. The spines have long been used by many people to craft things. Remove the spines and skin the pads prior to eating.

When eating the pads, take time to remove the rough skins and spines of the pad. Then boil the pads to remove the jelly like inside. Afterwards, you can grill, stir-fry, or air-fry the pads.

Native to most of the southern U.S.

Natural range in FL includes the entire state.

Prefers full sun but will tolerate a small amount of shade

Likes dry sandy soils and will tolerate drought.

Can reach 2-3' tall and up to 4' wide

Can be grown in zones 8-11.
