The Natchez Blackberry is one of our favorite cultivars for Florida. It is a thornless blackberry known for its large, glossy black berries, richly sweet flavor, and vigorous semi-erect growth habit. You may want to help support it by growing it near other plants or by staking some of the tall canes. Natchez is easy to manage, highly productive, and a favorite for fresh eating, baking, jams, preserves, and wildlife attraction. Its excellent flavor appeals to both people and animals, making it a powerful addition to food plots, homesteads, and backyard orchards.
One of the earliest ripening blackberries, Natchez begins producing as early as May, giving growers a head start on sweet summer harvests. With a low chill requirement of just 300 chill hours, Natchez thrives in warmer climates and performs reliably across USDA Zones 5–9. This makes it a great addition to southern gardens.
Blackberries are a great understory plant. This means that they do well underneath taller plants such as small trees. More sunlight does increase harvests and flavor. However, they have shallow roots and should be mulched or have afternoon shade for the best success here in Florida.
