Chapman's goldenrod (Solidago odora var. chapmanii) is a beautiful Florida-native perennial wildflower in the Asteraceae family. Nearly endemic to the region, it occurs throughout the Florida peninsula and into southeastern Georgia, thriving in dry sandy upland habitats such as longleaf pine sandhills, dry open woods, pine flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, pine rocklands, sandhills, open pine and oak woods, and occasionally ruderal or disturbed sites—preferring poor, well-drained, acidic sandy soils with full sun exposure (our favorite!)

This herbaceous perennial typically grows 1–3 feet tall (sometimes up to about 3 feet), with an upright to somewhat arching habit, often taller than wide but occasionally leaning or forming small open patches or colonies over time through self-seeding or rhizomatous spread.

From late summer through fall—typically peaking in September to October or November—Chapman's goldenrod produces showy, bright golden-yellow flower heads in loose, wand-like or plumed terminal clusters (panicles) along the upper stems. These fragrant yellow blooms light up the landscape and provide one of the season's most reliable nectar sources and are attractive to a wide variety of pollinators, including native bees (such as sweat bees and mining bees), butterflies, beetles, and other insects—making it a keystone late-season resource. Songbirds like goldfinches and sparrows feast on the seeds, while small mammals browse the foliage and flowers, and the plant offers cover for wildlife.

Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, Chapman's goldenrod prefers full sun and dry to mesic sandy soils (it handles poor fertility well but may thrive in slightly richer conditions). It dies back in winter and regrows vigorously in spring. As an excellent native for Florida landscapes, it's ideal for dry wildflower gardens, sandhill restorations, pine woodland edges, naturalistic plantings, or pollinator habitats, adding brilliant fall color while supporting local ecosystems.
