SunPatients are a cultivated variety of the traditional Impatient that many gardeners are familiar with. What makes SunPatients so unique is that they are a hybrid species that are well adapted to full sun and hot environments. Growing traditional Impatients in Florida has been tricky. The Florida growing season for Impatients is the winter season as they can not tolerate Florida sun or heat. Outside of Florida, gardeners can definitely expand their growing season. 
 
But....
 
Impatients have been through some controversy here in Florida. The University of Florida UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-native Plants in Florida’s Natural Areas has predicted that Impatients will likely become an invasive species in Florida. They no longer recommend self-seeding Impatients for Florida gardeners. 
 
However, our hybrid SunPatients are a sterile variety of Impatients and are actually recommended for Florida gardeners. This is mostly due to the fact that SunPatients can not grow from seed. But, they also can tolerate spring and summer sun unlike the traditional Impatients. 
 
There are many colors and many different foliage colors amongst all the hybrids we generally call SunPatients. 
 
While SunPatients can be grown almost all year in Florida, there are a few things gardeners must keep in mind. The first and most important is that SunPatients require consistent moisture during the warm Florida seasons. We recommend planting SunPatients in areas that have irrigation or are in areas a gardener is willing to provide extra water via garden hose consistently. We attribute this plant as basically needing an "IV drip" of water during warm weather. If the watering needs can be achieved, these flowering plants can bring stunning color to any landscape. The beautiful flowers and foliage is the main reason they are incorporated in many commercial landscapes. 
 
SunPatients are also resistant to the downy mildew disease that has been a major problem for Impatients in Florida gardens. Because it is a disease resistant, sun loving, and warm weather tolerating plant, SunPatients can be a great addition to any Florida landscape. 
 
Our favorite method of incorporating SunPatients into a Florida landscape is by planting them in decorative pots. The pots can help achieve moisture retention that help these plants to thrive. Planting in a decorative pot also helps elevate them above the rest of the landscape which really showcases their attractive blooms and unique foliage.
