4-6" Potted Plant
Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a classic culinary herb beloved for its fragrant foliage, fresh flavor, and versatility in the kitchen. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa, basil has been cultivated for centuries and is now a favorite in herb gardens around the world. Its lush, bright-green leaves and aromatic growth make it equally appealing in vegetable gardens, containers, raised beds, and ornamental herb plantings.
Best grown as a warm-season annual, Sweet Basil thrives in USDA Zones 2–11 when planted after the danger of frost has passed, although it can grow as a perennial in frost-free tropical climates. Give basil full sun—ideally 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day—and rich, fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Regular moisture is important, but avoid waterlogged soil. Basil grows especially vigorously in warm weather, making it an excellent choice for summer gardens and patio containers.
Sweet Basil develops into a bushy, upright plant generally reaching about 1–2 feet tall and wide. Frequent harvesting or pinching of the growing tips encourages branching and produces a fuller, more productive plant. Removing flower buds as they appear also helps maintain tender foliage and prolongs the harvest, although the small white flowers are attractive and beneficial to pollinators. With its fast growth and continuous supply of aromatic leaves, basil is an especially rewarding herb for home gardeners.
In the kitchen, Sweet Basil is a staple of Mediterranean and Italian cuisine and is particularly famous as a key ingredient in fresh pesto. Its tender leaves are delicious in salads, pasta dishes, sauces, sandwiches, soups, and tomato-based recipes, and they pair beautifully with garlic, olive oil, and fresh tomatoes. For the best flavor, harvest leaves regularly and use them fresh; basil can also be preserved by freezing or drying. Easy to grow, highly productive, and wonderfully fragrant, Sweet Basil is an essential addition to any kitchen garden.
