Vanillaleaf or vanilla-leaf is a Florida native wildflower that can make a great addition to your native garden. As you may have guessed, the common name comes from the fragrance. When mature leaves are crushed, a vanilla-like scent can be smelled. The Latin species name odoratissiums is was given because it means "most fragrant".

Vanillaleaf blooms in summer through fall. This makes it a great late season flower to compliment your garden. When not in bloom, foliage stays low to the ground. Then, flower stalks can grow up to 4 feet and split off several times for clusters of purple / lavender blooms. While considered a long-lived perennial, it does go dormant in the winter with either complete loss of foliage or foliage receding to a smaller size.

Best used in native garden, specifically in an area grown similar to a wild meadow. Can be grown well in understories of mature but thin canopy trees such as pine trees.

Native to Florida.

Natural range in FL varies upon species and variety.

Likes full sun but tolerates partial shade.

Prefers moist soils but not inundation. When established, it can tolerate short droughts but will become overly stressed if soil is not kept moist during hot summer months.

Foliage remains low to the ground and flowers reach up to 4 feet tall.

Can be grown in zones 8-9
