A unique hybrid of two North American species, Vaccinium 'Hodnett' combines the wild resilience of V. fuscatum (commonly known as black highbush blueberry) with the fruiting power of V. corymbosum, the classic highbush blueberry.
Hodnett Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Hodnett') is a selected cultivar of highbush blueberry, well-adapted to the southeastern United States, including regions like Florida with its humid subtropical climate and acidic soils.
This upright, moderately vigorous deciduous shrub typically reaches heights of 6–10 feet or more, forming a sturdy, productive plant suitable for home gardens, landscapes, or small-scale fruit production. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, highly acidic soils (pH 4.5–5.5), much like the native highbush blueberry habitats in Florida's swamps, woodlands, and wetland margins.
In spring, it produces clusters of small, white to pinkish, bell-shaped flowers that attract pollinators. These develop into medium-sized, dusky blue to dark purple berries that ripen in early to mid-summer. The fruit is known for its balanced sweet-tart flavor with excellent sweetness, firm texture, and good eating quality—often described as highly flavorful and enjoyable fresh or in culinary uses.
As a tough, regionally adapted variety, 'Hodnett' performs reliably in the Southeast's warm, humid conditions, offering both ornamental appeal (with potential fall color in reds and purples) and reliable yields of delicious, antioxidant-rich berries. It is a great choice for growers seeking a productive highbush type suited to milder winters compared to traditional northern varieties.
(Note: While Vaccinium corymbosum is native to parts of northern and central Florida in wild forms, 'Hodnett' is a cultivated selection bred or selected for enhanced performance in southern environments.)
