Elliot's blueberry (Vaccinium elliottii), also known as Elliott's huckleberry or Mayberry, is a delightful Florida-native deciduous shrub in the Ericaceae family (blueberry relatives). It occurs in the northern and central parts of the state, favoring habitats such as pine flatwoods, sandhills, open woodlands, forest edges, bottomlands, riverbanks, and thickets—typically in sandy, acidic, well-drained soils, often as an understory plant in moist to moderately dry conditions.
This multi-stemmed, upright to bushy shrub generally reaches 3–8 feet tall (sometimes up to 10–12 feet in optimal settings), with an open, rounded habit and slender, somewhat zigzag twigs that are often reddish or green and lightly pubescent. The bark on older stems is grayish.
Leaves are alternate, simple, and deciduous (sometimes tardily so), elliptic to narrowly ovate, typically 1–1.5 inches long (under 1 inch wide), with entire to finely serrated margins, glossy dark green surfaces (shiny above and below), and a somewhat thickened, leathery feel. These characteristics can be vital to diffentiating blueberry species.
In early spring—often one of the earliest bloomers among Florida blueberries—clusters of small, urn-shaped (elongated bell-like) white to pale pink flowers appear on bare or newly leafing stems, in groups of 3–5 or more along the branches. These fragrant blooms emerge as early as late winter to early spring in Florida's warmer climates, attracting native bees, butterflies, and other early pollinators.
By late spring to early summer (often ripening as early as May, hence the name "Mayberry"), the flowers develop into small, juicy, edible black berries about 1/3 inch in diameter. The berries are sweet and flavorful—excellent fresh, in pies, jams, or preserves—and provide important food for birds, wildlife, and humans.Foliage turns brilliant red to crimson in fall, adding striking seasonal color before leaf drop. As a low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly native, Elliot's blueberry is an outstanding choice for naturalized gardens, woodland edges, edible landscapes, or pollinator habitats in northern and central Florida, offering multi-season interest from early blooms and berries to vivid autumn hues.
