There are several species of Rhynchospora native to Florida belonging to the sedge family. Starrush and closely related species are unique sedges in that they have attractive flowers. Sedges are pollinated by wind, so an attractive flower is not needed to attract pollinators. Starrush has a spring bloom of small shite flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
It is a great groundcover for moist areas. It prefers consistent moisture and even brief flooding. Use it in a rain garden or an area of your property that stays wet. It will grow as a long-lived perennial in a good area.
