This week's "What is it Wednesday" stumped a lot of people. But we had several correct answers and the winner of this week's contest has been notified on their Facebook comment. Make sure you check your notifications!
What was it?
This week's plant is commonly called Cuphea, which is actually the name of the genus containing lots of species, cultivars, and hybrids. Other common names for the variety pictured are "Firecracker" and "Cigar Plant". This variety is called "Vermillionaire" which is brilliant. Every time I see it, I imagine Lil Wayne rapping "Vermillionaire".
Cuphea plants are magnets for butterflies and hummingbirds who prefer the tubular shaped flowers as a source of delicious nectar. They are not native to Florida but are Florida Friendly.
Thanks to everyone who participated. Please help us reach more people by sharing our posts or telling others. For every 10 participants we donate money to some great organizations.
